Deep in West Columbia, Texas—the first capital of the Republic of Texas—Frank C. Massey, Johnny's great-grandfather, owned barbecue pits that smoked with grit, heart, and unmistakable flavor. His sauce crowned every slab of ribs, brisket, and chicken that came off the pit. Slathered on top or served on the side, it wasn't just barbecue sauce—it was Texas tradition in a bottle. In 1937, amid Texas smoke, sweat, and hard work, a family legacy took root. What began beside those pits would endure through four generations, passed from one family table to the next, carrying with it the spirit of Texas barbecue.

As the years passed, the recipe remained a family treasure. Every generation protected it. Every generation added to its story. When Johnny inherited the recipe, he honored its roots while carefully refining it into a flavor profile all his own. The result became the signature taste that defines ZIMMZ today:

It was there that Johnny, Jeff Zimmerman, and Drew built a friendship that would span more than four decades.

Football fields.

Weight rooms.

Beach days.

Shared meals.

The kind of friendship that grows stronger with time. Life eventually took each friend down a different path. Jeff became part of the legendary "Gator Great Wall" before playing for the Dallas Cowboys. Drew built a successful career in Corporate Leadership. Johnny answered a different calling, serving in the United States Army. But no matter where life led, the bond of High School friends remained.

Before ZIMMZ ever reached a bottle, Johnny's character was forged in a different kind of fire.

As a U.S. Army Iraq War Veteran serving during the early years of the conflict, he learned what real pressure feels like.

A BROTHER'S ENCOURAGEMENT

Before Jeff was drafted to the Heavenly Football League (HLF) and before ZIMMZ became ZIMMZ BAR-B-Q Sauce, during one of Johnny and Jeff's weekly Wednesday conversations, Jeff shared words that would leave a lasting mark.

"JB, what you did with your great-grandpa's sauce—making it a tad sweet—it's liquid gold. Get it out there, brother. If there's anything I can do, let me know. People are going to love it."

The words stuck. Not because they came from a former NFL player. But because they came from a lifelong friend. A brother. Someone who had been there through every season of life — High School bond.

THE AUDIBLE THAT BUILT A BRAND

The original plan was to launch under the name TUBBE'S, honoring Johnny's grandmother and family heritage. But before the brand could truly begin, a trademark challenge threatened its future. Johnny and Drew faced a choice. Quit. Or overcome and adapt. They chose to call an audible at the line of scrimmage. Out of that challenge came something even stronger.
