Our Story: Rooted In 1937 — ESTD. 2018

ABOUT US:

Where It All Began

Deep in West Columbia, Texas — the first capital of the Republic of Texas — Frank C. Massey, Johnny’s great-grandfather, fired up barbecue pits that smoked with grit, heart, and unmistakable flavor. His sauce crowned every slab of ribs, brisket, and chicken that came off the pit. Slathered on top or served on the side, it wasn’t just barbecue sauce — it was Texas tradition in a bottle. In 1937, out of smoke, soul, and hard work, a family legacy was born. That recipe would pass through three generations.

When Johnny picked up the torch, he honored the original — but brought his own touch. He refined it into a signature flavor profile that became:

“A Tad Sweet. Just The Right Heat.”

The roots were Texas. The fire never went out.

Forged by Brotherhood

Though the recipe was born in Texas, the friendships that would shape ZIMMZ were forged in Florida.

It was there that Johnny, Jeff Zimmerman, and Drew grew up — building bonds on football fields, in weight rooms, at the beach and around fun High School times. Friendship wasn’t just a word. It was lived in a bond that has lasted for 45+ plus years.

Jeff would go on to become part of the legendary “Gator Great Wall,” later playing for the Dallas Cowboys. Drew after Florida State University went off to the highest levels of corporate leadership, and Johnny to the U.S. Army, working his way up to a Platoon Sergeant. But long before the stadium lights, Corporate office, and Military. There were high school memories, fun times, and mom’s cooking — the kind of meals that stick with you for lifetime.

One day during their weekly Wednesday chat Jeff told Johnny:

“JB, (nickname Jeff gave Johnny) what you did with your great-grandpa’s sauce — making it a tad sweet — it’s liquid gold. Get it out there, brother. If there is anything I can do let me know. People will love it.”

When Jeff was drafted to Team Pearly Gates, Johnny and Drew knew the bond couldn’t end there. Out of honor. Out of brotherhood. Out of lifelong friendship — ZIMMZ was born.

Fire-Tested

Before ZIMMZ ever reached a bottle, Johnny’s character was forged in a different kind of fire.

As a U.S. Army Iraq War Veteran serving in one of the most volatile regions during the early days of the war, he learned what real pressure feels like. Discipline. Leadership. Brotherhood when things get loud. Those lessons never left.

When he came home, they found their place around a smoker instead of a battlefield.

Barbecue, like service, is about patience. It’s about steady hands. It’s about bringing people together.

ZIMMZ carries that same commitment — to excellence, loyalty, and honoring the people at your table.

The Audible That Built a Brand

Originally named TUBBE’S to honor Johnny’s grandmother, the brand faced a trademark challenge from Big Corporate. Instead of folding, Johnny and Drew called an audible at the line of scrimmage. Out of that challenge came something stronger: ZIMMZ. A name rooted in friendship. Built on legacy. Strengthened by adversity.

Flavor Crowned. Legacy Reigns.
